Rapoport Academy sophomore Marco Cunningham made school history for the most medals won at state when he came in second place in two distance races on Friday, May 12, at the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Championships in Austin.
Cunningham’s first race was the Class 2A 3200-meter run on Friday morning. He ran a time of 9:44.17 to place second in the event, losing to Wolfe City junior Caden Thurman by just 11 seconds.
Next in the 2A 1600-meter run, Cunningham finished with a time of 4:30.52, just 7 seconds shy of the first-place runner. Both times were personal best records for Cunningham who also qualified for this year’s state cross-country meet where he placed 22nd overall.
Rapoport’s Athletic Director Bryan Foreman says he is proud of the effort Cunningham has put in to perform at this high level and expects big things from Cunningham in the next two years of his high school career.
"I couldn't be more proud of Marco. There's nothing better than seeing the hard work that he puts in on a daily basis pay off. His passion for the sport and commitment to excellence are unmatched. This is only the beginning for him."
Other Rapoport athletes who have competed at the state track meet include Rene Rodriguez who qualified for the 1600M in 2021, placing 6th, and Blaine Listach who was the 2A State High Jump Champion in 2014 and 2015.
